The native vegetation of Italy reflects the diversity of the prevailing physical environments in the country. There are at least three zones of differing vegetation: the Alpsthe Po valley, and the Mediterranean-Apennine area. From the foot of the Alps to their highest peaks, three bands of vegetation can be distinguished.

First, around the Lombard lakes, the most common trees are the evergreen cork oak, the European olivethe cypressand the cherry laurel. Slightly higher, on the mountain plain, the beech is ubiquitousgiving place gradually to the deciduous larch and the Norway spruce. In the high-altitude zone, twisted shrubs, including rhododendron, green alder, and dwarf juniper, give way to pastureland that is covered with grasses and sedges and wildflowers such as gentian, rock jasmine, campion, sea bindweed, primrose, and saxifrage.

Farther up there is curved sedge, with the dwarf willow and the lovely anthophytes. On the snow line there are innumerable mosses, lichens, and a few varieties of hardy pollinating plants, such as flags and saxifrage.

In the Po valley almost nothing remains of the original forests; nearly all the vegetation has been planted or disposed by human activity.

Poplars predominate where there is abundant water, but in the drier, more gravelly zones there are a few sedges.

On the clayey upland plains, heather abounds, and there are forests of Scotch pine. There are the usual grasses beside the streams and in the bogs and water lilies and pondweed on the banks of the marshes. But the heavily predominant plants are the cultivated crops—wheat, corn maizepotatoes, rice, and sugar beets.

In the Apennine zone along the whole peninsula, a typical tree is the holm oak, while the area closer to the sea is characterized by the olive, oleander, carob, mastic, and Aleppo pine.

There is a notable development of pioneer sea grape on the coastal dunes. The Mediterranean foothill area is characterized by the cork oak and the Aleppo pine. Higher up, in southern Italy, there are still traces of the ancient mountain forest, with truffle oak, chestnut, flowering ash, Oriental oak, white poplar, and Oriental plane.

There are quite extensive beech woods in Calabria on La Sila and Aspromonte massifs and Pugliaand the silver fir and various kinds of pines thrive in Abruzzo and Calabria. Where the forests have been destroyed in the strictly Mediterranean section of the Apennines, a scrub that is called maquis has grown up. On the island of Sardinia the destruction of the carob forests and on the Apulian Plain the decay of olive trees and shore vegetation have produced steppes of tough plants such as the various sorts of feather grass.

Mountain meadowlands are found in Calabria and Basilicatausually with vetch, bent grass, and white asphodel. The Apennine pasturelands are very much like those of the Alps.

The papyrus is quite common in Sicily as a freshwater plant. The extent of animal life in Italy has been much reduced by the long presence of human beings. In the Alps there are many animals, such as marmots, that hibernate and others that change their protective colouring according to the season, such as the ermine, the mountain partridge, and the Alpine rabbit.

Larger mammals include the ibex, which is protected in Gran Paradiso National Parkthe chamois in the Central Alps, and the roe deer in the eastern Alps. The lynx, the stoat, and the brown bear protected in Adamello and Brenta are now rare. Alpine birds include the black grouse, the golden eagleand, more rarely, the capercaillie, or wood grouse. Among the reptiles are vipers, and among the amphibians are the Alpine salamander and Alpine newt.

Species that are found in the Alps also exist in other high mountain regions, where there are, however, more foxes and wolves. In Abruzzo the brown bear may be found, and on the island of Sardinia the fallow deerthe mouflon, and the wild boar are present. The Italy Pavilion consists of the permanent building Palazzo Italia 6 levels, built area 14, sqm and the temporary buildings along the Cardo 2 levels, built area: 12, sqm. Palazzo Italia reaches a height of 35 meters, the highest peak within the Expo site. The Cardo temporary buildings contain: exhibition spaces, events spaces, offices, restaurant spaces and terraces events. Palazzo Italia is considered an architectural and constructive challenge for the complexity and innovation in design, materials and technologies used.

Plant life

For Nemesi, the spark for Palazzo Italia was a concept of cohesion in which the force of attraction generates a rediscovered sense of community and belonging. The internal piazza represents the community's energy. This space - the symbolic heart of the complex - is the starting point for the exhibition route, in the midst of the four volumes that make up Palazzo Italia.

Palazzo Italia draws on the concept of an "urban forest" with the branched outer envelope designed by Nemesi. For the design of this "skin" Nemesi has created a unique and original geometric texture that evokes the intertwining random branches. When this material comes into contact with light, it can "capture" pollution in the air, transforming it into inert salts and reducing smog levels. Together with the building's envelope of branches, it will be a manifest expression of innovation in design and technology.

Expo Dubai World's Fair.We explored many ideas, creating trees with themes of Italian food, Italian cinema and Italian cities.

Finally, using cutouts of aerial photographs of countryside and landscapes from all regions of Italy, we designed the final version of our "Italian Tree of Life", which is used as the floor pattern in the exhibition spaces that speak of Italian products and food. The Emerging dome of the pavilion, representing a tree of energy and sustainability, announces to the visitors the central exhibition area and using a system of photovoltaic cells, provides solar energy to the building, the ventilation system inside the dome, and to both the necessary and "Spectacular" lighting systems.

The Dome and the splendor of the Italian City. The landscapes of Rome, Florence, Torino, and Venice are associated with a skyline of domes, which in different ages have always been, in Italy, the place of outstanding architectural achievement.

From the Pantheon of ancient Rome, to Brunelleschi in Florence, to Bramante, Bernini, Borromini, and Nervi, the Italian dome tells both the story of the civilization and its artistic wonders. The dome in our project not only tells the history of the splendor of Italy, but also represents the potential of the construction of domes for the future.

Continuing the path forged by the inventor and engineer Buckminster fuller, here we experiment with domes as sustainable structures. Structures that, besides being beautiful, utilize minimal materials and optimize a great ease of construction.

In the central pavilion, the great dome attracts the public and gives a necessary point of reference as well as a splendid form for the organization of internal spaces. In the buildings of Cardo, more domes built primarily out of wooden materials will host different expositions, leading the public through the various topics of the expo in a fluid and ever changing manner. These domes are visible behind the glass facades of Ferretti, and become an attraction themselves.

These pavilions act as a breeding ground for ideas, serving as an example of how to enrich our cities with community spaces in an easy and economical way through the use of natural materials. The Italian world will be present throughout the Cardo and the Italian Pavilion in the form of kaleidoscope.

We played with viewing Italy through a kaleidoscope and enjoyed seeing the richness of its transformed image.

A timeless design motif combines with 21st century technology in the Tree of Life at the Universal Exposition in Milan, May 1 to October The interactive installation — a linear tree-like structure of wood and steel that climbs 37 meters high — has been described as a monument, a sculpture, a building and a work of art.

The Universal Exposition has the dual themes of feeding the planet and energy for life. It explores how technology, innovations, culture, traditions and creativity relate to food and diet worldwide.

The Tree of Life was created by a consortium of Italian businesses and serves as the centrepiece for the activities of the Italian Pavilion. It is located in Lake Arena, a meter wide pond with a seating area for 3, people and concentric circles of trees. The Tree of Life comes alive with daytime shows featuring music by contemporary Italian composers and evening shows specially scored for the Expo.

LED lighting, projections and special effects combine with dancing waters to charm visitors of all ages. Marco Balich designed the Tree of Life, inspired by drawings by Michelangelo, and serves as artistic director of the project.
